Cloud architects must have or develop a vast collection of skills. Surprisingly, this is a role in which transversal skills play a crucial role along with technical skills. Here is a list of skills and qualifications that a cloud architect must have or acquire to excel in this field:
Solid overall corporate IT experience: ideally, this means one or more titles in IT, GIS, IT or something similar, with a good understanding of how companies use information technology for a wide range of objectives and applications.
Strong technical skills in corporate IT: cloud architect jobs must understand the basic components of IT. These include client systems and applications, networks, infrastructure, data centers, programming languages, web tools and technologies, databases and Big Data and ERP. In fact, cloud architects are generally experts in one or more of these fields or technological disciplines. But their experience aims to create a vision of what is needed and how it could be implemented, not necessarily to get involved in the construction or maintenance of the solutions they design. In the literature, this is sometimes described as a "T-shaped skill profile." Broad but superficial skills apply to most technical areas (the vertical line of the T), with one or more skill sets and deep knowledge in one or two technical areas (the crossbar of the T).
Communication: An essential feature for IT architects are well-developed communication skills, using all available and relevant communication methods. These include the ability to communicate clearly, directly and convincingly in writing and in person, in individual conversations and group meetings. Cloud architects should also be able to organize meetings and manage (read: communicate with) all kinds of people, including C-level executives, managers, technical experts, end users or customers and other interested parties.
